The third edition of the ‘Nuits Sonores Festival’ will be held in Lyon from May 4th to May 8th (the pre-festival will begin April 29th). With 15,000 in 2002 and more than 30,000 spectators in 2003, this authentic panorama of the electronic musics and cultures, organized by the Arty Farty association, emerged as the most significant French electronic festival.
As every year, the festival will enter about fifty places in the city : concert halls, bars, clubs, but also galleries, cinemas, museums or emblematic places of the Lyon architectural heritage. This year, the main reception places will be: ‘Les Subsistances’, ‘Les Salins du Midi’, the Rhône Swimming-pool, the ‘Jardin de la Visitation’, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the ‘Maison de la Danse’, the ‘Rectangle’, the ‘Ninkasi’, the ‘Villa Gillet’... A lot of performances will be organized directly outdoor, on the street, and on the different city squares.
More than the previous years, the Nuits Sonores team wants to strengthen the urban and ambulatory form of the festival, which favours meetings, movement and emulation.
1. Electronic panorama
The ‘Nuits Sonores Festival’ is entirely dedicated to electronic musics and cultures. Based on the multiplicity and diversity of the different electronic movements (techno, electronica, house, drum n’bass, breakbeat...), the Nuits Sonores programming also opens itself to all innovative musics that interact with electronic music : hip-hop, jazz, electro-rock, experimental musics... 2. General presentation of the 2005 Festival
The opening
Every year, the Nuits Sonores opening night takes place in a particularly original place (the Rhône Swimming-pool, the ELAC Gardens) to welcome more than 1,500 professionals, journalists, partners or real electronic music aficionados. It is also the occasion to focus on the local electronic scene. In 2005, the opening will take place in an exceptional setting, the Rhône swimming pool.
The ‘Nuits Sonores’
The three paying Nuits Sonores wane the « electronic musics panorama », which is the main aim of the festival. The objective is to present -in the strong places of the patrimony and culture - the most innovative local, national and international artists, who are really emblematic of a festive, aesthetic and pioneer culture. First night at the Subsistances, Third and Fourth Night at the Salins du Midi. Thematic concert in the « Cour Carrée » of the Subsistances, before the Fourth Night.
The ‘Circuit Electronique’
The free ‘Circuit Electronique’, second night of the festival, will allow the participants to deambulate in the city for 18 hours, between the different steps proposed by the festival in collaboration with the different structures (labels, associations, artists, clubs...) which contribute to the development of the electronic musics in Lyon. In 2005, 9 steps are programmed.
The ‘Parcours Associé’
The ‘Parcours Associé’ has the ambition to federate the galleries, museums, cultural institution or alternative groups in order to propose - through cinema, video, meetings, plastic arts... - a complementary, creative and new approach on the electronic cultures.
The ‘Carte Blanche’
Every year, the Nuits Sonores festival grants a ‘Carte Blanche’ to a large European metropolis. Reflecting a dynamic and innovative electronic scene, it is usually presented by an emblematic structure of the invited city. After Marseilles in 2003 (with the label Bip-hop) and Barcelona in 2004 (Sonar sound), Manchester will unload in Lyon for the 2005 festival with the djs and historical figures of the Hacienda (Mike Pickering and Dave Haslam) and the most contemporary labels of the Manchester scene, like Grand Central (with a live by Riton), Cocosol1dc1t1 (Battery Operated and Chris Clark will represent the label). Manchester will also be represented in the ‘Parcours Associé’, particularly with an exhibition of the great group Central Station Design, and a meeting with Tony Wilson, creator of the Factory label and of the Hacienda club.
The ‘Apéros Sonores’
For the third edition of Nuits Sonores, the ‘Apéros Sonores’ become itinerant. The principle: each night is linked to a particular district, whose emblematic establishments, close or not to the electronic cultures, are mobilized to create a musical and festival effervescence.
The ‘Siestes Sonores’
Day of closure of the festival, the ‘Siestes Sonores’ invite a large audience to discover the electronic cultures within an outdoor and friendly atmosphere. There will be various animations mingled with artistic performances. In 2005, a banquet will open the day smoothly. An electronic vacuum-attic will be also installed on site.
